Chiberia
(2022)
Chicago, United States of America
Chicago is a big city that is very well-known for its harsh winter. With the polar air from the Arctic, all beaches, harbors, shores, and even the large part of Lake Michigan along this lakefront are frozen and covered with thick layers of snow and ice. Stemming from my overwhelm by the significance of these scenes, “Chiberia” is a series of landscape photography that was taken during my journeys to the Chicago lakefronts during the extreme winter of 2021. Explaining this project name, “Chiberia” is a Chicagoan's funny term to describe their city's harsh condition by combining the names “Chicago” with “Siberia”. These photographs focus on the impacts of this extreme weather on different objects, places, and nature along Chicago lakefront trails. To capture them at the most intense coldness, I spent many days repeatedly walking on these trails with my camera and tripod and shot with different compositions.
